Australia: Protecting Private Bits.

Legal proceedings commenced against Amazon.com Inc and its Alexa internet software subsidiary allege that the companies have breached the privacy rights of US consumers.

Court documents allege that Alexa used its computer software to secretly intercept electronic communications and other personal data of consumers and forwarded that information to third parties, including Amazon.

It is also alleged that both Amazon and Alexa breached US privacy laws and two Federal laws prohibiting the interception of electronic communications. Amazon has denied the allegations in a document it has lodged with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

"Similar proceedings could be launched under Australian law in relation to the unauthorised interception of electronic communications," said Leif Gamertsfelder, an e-commerce lawyer at leading Australian international law firm Deacons Graham & James. The absence of privacy rights in Australia means that alleged conduct would not breach privacy laws in this country.
