Resumen
Self-directed learning and its management are one of the basic skills in the
contemporary world for everybody, especially for adult educators. They need these skills at
least for two reasons. At first, they need to be able to develop these skills for their students,
but it’s possible only if they have them by themselves. And this is the second reason,
because majority of them indeed are not able to manage their own leaning, it means their
self-directed learning skills are not on appropriate level. Diversity of their professional
qualification and preparation for teaching in common, sometimes quite low level of
educational competences and the lack of the regulation of qualification improvement
(especially in non-formal education) leads to different possibilities for them to use any tools
and activities for qualification improvement. With the aim to wider these possibilities and to
increase level of their educational skills the electronic platform for adult learning in Europe
(EPALE) was established. The platform is useful and qualitative virtual learning environment
and the exceptional feature of it is the possibility for active users not only search and use
the information, but also create or reconstruct, in other words, manage, the content of the
platform, to meet partners, to discuss important adult learning topics, as well as to exchange
ideas and materials to support professional practice, but the respondents’ survey showed
that majority of them lack self-directed learning skills and abilities to manage their own
learning, so they prefer to be more passive user of the platform.
Keywords: Electronic platform for adult learning, management of self-directed
learning, self-directed learning.
Abstract

INTRODUCTION
Self-directed learning or even more exactly management of self-directed
learning is one of the basic skills in the contemporary world for everybody and
especially for adult educators. They need these skills for at least two reasons.
First, the adult educators, especially those who are working in non-formal
education, are very diverse and have very different possibilities to develop their
qualification in comparing to those who work in formal adult education. And
the second reason is that the educators’ need to be able to develop these skills
for their students. But at first, they should have these skills by themselves.
To eliminate or minimize the first reason and at the same time to empower
adults –learners ands also their educators we already have great tool– the
electronic platform for adult learning in Europe (EPALE). EPALE is a multilingual
open membership community for teachers, trainers, researchers, academics, policy
makers and anyone else with a professional role in adult learning across Europe.
EPALE is an initiative of the Directorate-General for Education, Youth,
Sport and Culture of the European Commission. It is set up around the sharing
of content related to adult learning, including news, blog posts, resources, and
events (Electronic Platform for Adult Learning in Europe, 2018).
