PRESENTACIÓN
(Historia Constitucional, núm. 19, 2018)
Este número es tristemente especial. Es el
primero que ve la luz sin que el fundador de la
revista, y hasta ahora director, Joaquín Varela
Suanzes-Carpegna, pueda verlo y redactar estas
líneas introductorias. El profesor Varela, todo un
ejemplo académico y humano, nos dejó el pasado
mes de febrero, tras una hercúlea lucha de varios
años con la enfermedad que, lamentableme nte,
acabó por imponerse a su extraordinaria
vitalidad.
Su huella permanecerá indeleble a través
de sus obras, que no son sólo aquellas
innumerables publicaciones que engendró su
maestría en la historia constitucional; son
también los proyectos colectivos –el Seminario
Martínez Marina, la Biblioteca Virtual de Historia
Constitucional, la editorial “In Itinere”– de entre
los que la revista “Historia Constitucional”
siempre ocupó para él un lugar destacado.
Tuve la fortuna de asistir al
alumbramiento de “Historia Constitucional” en el
año 2000 y de trabajar en los años siguiente,
codo con codo con mi maestro y amigo, Joaquín
Varela, para que lo que era una modesta
iniciativa llegara a convertirse en la prestigiosa
revista que es a día de hoy. El profesor Varela
siempre se mostró tremendamente orgulloso e
ilusionado con ella, y llevaba a gala ser su
director y fundador. Y no lo era sólo formalmente,
sino que revisaba cada número con enorme celo,
porque “Historia Constitucional” tenía que ser el
escaparate en el que se mostrase la excelencia de
la disciplina que él tanto contribuyó a construir:
la historia constitucional comparada.
No hay mejor forma que rendir homenaje
al maestro Joaquín Varela que continuar, con
humildad y tesón, la revista que tanto le costó
poner en marcha y apuntalar. Porque esa fue su
voluntad: que todos aquellos proyectos
intelectuales que había emprendido le
sobreviviesen y siguiesen aportando un grano de
arena en la construcción de la historia
constitucional. En este sentido, no puedo sino
agradecer el renovado compromiso con la revista
que han manifestado expresamente el Servicio de
Publicaciones de la Universidad de Oviedo, el
Centro de Estudios Políticos y Constitucionales y
los investigadores titulares del Seminario
Martínez Marina. Con su apoyo, la revista
mantendrá la misma línea editorial que venía
siguiendo hasta hoy y que ha contribuido a
consolidarla a nivel internacional, aunque, como
siempre quiso el profesor Varela, con la
aspiración de seguir creciendo.
Por nuestra parte, haremos todo lo posible
para que el deseo de Joaquín Varela sea realidad
y no defraudar su memoria.

PRESENTATION
(Historia Constitucional, issue NO. 19, 2018)
This issue is special for a sad reason. It is
the first that has been published which the
founder and, until now, director of the journal,
Joaquín Varela Suanzes-Carpegna, has not read
or written the introductory lines. Professor
Varela, an example of a true academic and
genuine human being passed away in February
after several years of a Herculean fight against
the illness which ultimately took his
extraordinary vitality.
He has left an indelible mark through his
work, not only the innumerable publications on
constitutional history created by his mastery but
also the collective projects –the Martínez Marina
Seminar, the Virtual Library of Constitutional
History, the “In Itinere” editorial – including the
journal “Historia Constitucional” which was
always among his top priorities.
I was fortunate enough to attend the
launch of “Historia Constitucional” in the year
2000 and to work over the next few years
shoulder to should with my master and friend,
Joaquín Varela, to convert what began a modest
initiative into the prestigious journal it is today.
Professor Varela was always tremendously proud
and passionate about it and undertook the role of
director and founder with great pride. He was not
only its director by title; he reviewed each issue
with devotion because “Historia Constitucional”
had to be the showcase that displayed the
excellence of the discipline to which he
contributed so much to build: comparative
constitutional history.
There is no better way to pay tribute to
the master Joaquín Varela than to continue,
humbly and with tenacity, the journal that he
struggled to establish and uphold. Because this
was his will: that all of the intellectual projects
that he had undertaken survived him and
continued to make their contribution, however
small, to the construction of constitutional
history. Therefore, I must express my gratitude to
the Publications Service of the University of
Oviedo, the Centre of Political and Constitutional
Studies and the research fellows of the Martínez
Marina Seminar for their renewed commitment to
the journal which they have expres sly
manifested. With their support, the journal will
maintain the same editorial line as it has until
now and which has contributed to consolidating
it on an international level, although, as always,
and as Professor Varela wished, with the
aspiration to continue growing.
For our part, we will do everything
possible to ensure that Joaquín Varela’s desire
becomes a reality and to honour his memory.
