Abstract: On March 19th, 2019, the American Karen Uhlenbeck became the first
woman to win the Abel Prize, considered the Nobel Prize of mathematics, which has
been awarded annually since it was found 2002 The same has happened with the
Fields Medal, prestigious distinction awarded every four years since 1936 to a
maximum of four mathematicians and that has only been received by a woman, the
Iranian Maryam Mirzakhani in 2014 Facts like these show how, historically, women
have not had the same opportunities as men and have been relegated from many areas
of society, such as science or mathematics, imposing very defined roles related to
housework and care of the family Therefore, few women have excelled in
mathematics, in other words, few women have had the opportunity to excel in
mathematics However, a rigorous study of the history of mathematics allows us to
find women who fought to break through in a traditionally masculine environment
and vetoed for them Women like Theano, considered the first mathematical woman,
Hipatia, Maria Gaetana Agnesi, Sophie Germain, Emmy Amelie Noether or, more
recently, Maryam Mirzakhani and Karen Uhlenbeck, are examples of women who,
with their contributions, have contributed to the development of maths The objectives
of this chapter are to give visibility to these and other women who, in the field of
mathematics, faced the prejudices of society and overcome many difficulties to fulfill
their ideals and contribute to the development of equal rights and opportunities
between men and women offering girls and young women models which they can feel
identified
