Good morning to everyone and thank you, Professor Jan Goldman, for your
invitation to speak at Georgetown University, which is an honor to me.
For years, when I was at College, I had a favorite game: I would spend
part of my free time and long hours in the summertime evenings playing The
Dictionary Game, a word game in which players guess the definition of an
obscure word.
In case you’re not familiar with it –or in case you want to challenge me
playing Dictionary after the conference–, let me briefly explain you how
it works. In each round one player selects and announces a difficult word
from the dictionary, and the other players compose a fake definition for it.
The player that has selected the word collects the definitions and reads them
aloud, together with the real definition, and then the remaining players vote
on which definition they believe to be correct. If you make a correct guess,
you get a point. And if your fake definition is voted as correct by another
player, you also get a point.
Of course, there are much more sophisticated exercises than those simply
carried out with a book, a pencil and a piece of paper, and I’m sure we’ll learn
a lot about those throughout this conference, but all of them help us to keep
